Do you have what it takes to be a CATCO Play Reader?

Do you enjoy theatre? Like to read and talk about plays? Want to help CATCO find exciting scripts for the years to come?

We’re looking for volunteers to join our Play Reading Groups.

Groups consist of 10 – 12 people, moderated by a CATCO staff member. Some play readers are stage professionals (actors, dramaturgs, teachers) but many are simply people with an interest in theatre. We try to vary the composition of each group so that readers have a wide variety of opinions and backgrounds. CATCO subscribers are particularly welcome.

You don’t need to be a theatre critic. We’re just looking for your “gut reaction” to a script. If you read ten pages and aren’t interested in the play, stop reading!

Each group will meet four times. Readers are assigned two scripts for each of these meetings.

The atmosphere is extremely informal (If you’d like to bake cookies, you’ll be very popular). The discussions are fun.

There are always many more applicants for these play reading groups than we can accommodate, so we ask that before you volunteer you make certain you have the necessary time and commitment to do the reading and attend the meetings. (And please bear in mind that you will be asked not to share the titles we discuss with other theatre companies.)

Group #1 (Plays about Science & Innovation) meets the following Mondays 6:30 – 8 PM:

October 13
October 27
November 10
December 1

Group #2 (Musicals) meets the following Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8 PM:

Group #4 (Contemporary Plays)* meets on the following Mondays from 6:30 to 8 pm:

November 17
November 24

*Please note that there is only one week between meetings for this group.

All meetings will take place in the Riffe Center (corner of State and High Street). Parking is available in the Riffe Center garage for about $2. You will be sent precise directions once you are confirmed.

To volunteer for a reading group, please contact Geoffrey Nelson at gnelson@catco.org, and indicate which groups you are available to participate in. Please list all your relevant contact info: name, home and e-mail addresses, phone numbers. If you have not worked with CATCO before, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

We are particularly interested in finding people with a background in science for Group #1 and with an expertise/strong interest in musicals for Group #2. If you have a background in either, please mention this.
