CAREER DEVELOPMENT & EXPLORATION

Acting & Theatre Classes

For nearly 17 years, CATCO has been providing Central Ohio with the highest quality theatre attracting the strongest professional staff of artists, technicians and administrators in the region.  Utilizing the experience, advanced training of these professionals, CATCO offers acting/theatre classes each season designed to teach those interested in pursuing a career in theatre as well as those who recognize the need to improve presentation skills and become more confident in public life. Special classes have been designed to enhance parent/child sharing time and aid parents with early childhood creativity.  Popular classes have included Creativity for the Business Professional, Acting for Camera, and, Introduction to Acting.  Custom classes are designed in cooperation with community organizations as time and resources permit.

Career Day Speakers

CATCO’s artistic, production, education, marketing and administrative staff members offer their time to area schools from elementary through college giving talks and presentations on various theatre related subjects.  Advance scheduling is required, but the service is offered free to interested schools.

Internships & Shadowing

CATCO offers un-paid internships to high school and college students throughout the year in accounting, administration, artistic/production, audience services, education, marketing, and development/fundraising.  All interns receive performance appraisals and are assigned a staff supervisor.   Although all inquires are considered, preference is given to requests for internships of two weeks or longer in order to incorporate adequate orientation time.  Interested parties are asked to submit a letter of interest and a resume (if available) to tstephens@catco.org

Each season CATCO welcomes hundreds of area students to shadow its staff for short-term periods as part of school shadowing programs.  Most average 2 – 4 hours and include one-on-one interview time.  All shadowing students are asked to complete a brief post-visit evaluation.  Schools and students are encouraged to schedule no less than 1 month in advance and should begin their discussions with CATCO early in the fall.

Professional Fellowships

CATCO offers paid professional fellowships in acting, technical theatre, production and stage management to individuals in the beginning of their professional theatre careers.  In order to be considered, candidates must have already completed some advanced professional training program.  CATCO’s Fellows undergo an interview process, receive performance appraisals and are assigned a staff supervisor.  In the case of the Acting Fellows, a formal audition is also required.  Fellowships in other departmental areas are offered as CATCO’s budget permits.  Fellowship positions are generally contracted in late May prior to their start dates, usually in mid-August.  Most Fellowships operate on a 36-week contract.  All Fellows will meet regularly with the Education Director in order to evaluate the programs future and each Fellow’s career goals.

Those interested in receiving information about the Acting Fellowship Program should contact Marianne Timmons at mtimmons@catco.org to schedule an audition.  Acting Fellows will be required to submit a professional headshot and resume along with a cover letter.

Those interested in receiving information about the Production Fellowship Program (Technical Theatre, Production and Stage Management) should contact T.J. Gerkens at tgerkens@catco.org to schedule an interview.  Interested parties will be asked to submit a letter of interest, a current resume and three references.

Inquires about possible openings in other areas should be directed to Thomas Stephens, Director of Education at tstephens@catco.org

LIFE-LONG COMMUNITY LEARNING

Behind the Scenes Tours

Backstage and building tours offer a glimpse of magic in the making.  See how professional theatre develops and meet the people who make it happen.  Tours must be scheduled in advance through the Education Department.

Community Speakers Bureau

CATCO provides staff, Board members, and other key representatives to serve as public spokespersons for CATCO.  These speakers are provided for free to businesses, schools, churches, social groups, etc. to inform them about CATCO, its programs and the theatre world in general.  These presentations last between 15-45 minutes depending on the topic and need of the specific group.  Advance scheduling is required.  Presentations to be included as part of a higher education curriculum may require a nominal fee.  Contact the Education Department to discuss to discuss scheduling a speaker.

Play Notes & Information Materials

In addition to providing area schools with detailed study guides, CATCO’s Education Director in collaboration with the stage director and dramaturg for each production compile detailed production overviews called Play Notes for the general public.  Copies of Play Notes can be found in the theatre lobby or downloaded from this site 6-weeks in advance of each production.

Production Speakers Services

Talkbacks lasting 15-20 minutes are offered following all Student/Senior Matinees, public talkbacks are scheduled throughout the run of each main stage production.  Talkback discussions last for 15 – 20 minutes immediately following select scheduled performances.  Talkbacks with the actors are scheduled for the first Sunday following opening.  Talkbacks with the dramaturge are generally scheduled for the third Sunday following opening.

Programs for Multiple Generation

To further aid in the development of a strong community, CATCO welcomes community members over the age of 62 to attend its daytime student matinees.  By combining the two largest demographic groups in the country, CATCO encourages cross-generation learning.  Ticket prices for senior groups at these performances are reduced to the nominal cost of $12.00 per ticket.  Groups of 10 or more should contact CATCO Group Sales by telephone at (614) 461-1382 extension 202
or by e-mail at cbrooks@catco.org to reserve tickets.

Additionally, CATCO works to develop customized programs off-site at senior and community centers that utilize the creative tools of theatre to invigorate our senior citizens and eliminate social and communication boundaries that may divide them from other ages and populations. Contact the Education Department to discuss program possibilities and fee schedules.

Xaviera Kvawogai, Student, Reynoldsburg High School, Reynoldsburg, Ohio

“Thank you so much for speaking to my seventh graders about acting as a career.  I know I learned some new things about unions and other jobs in the field.”
Pat Jordan, Educator, Willis Middle School, Delaware, Ohio

“I enjoyed touring your facility with Dublin teachers this week.  It’s a rare opportunity to talk with people professionally employed in the arts.  As a former high school thespian, it’s good to know there is life beyond the senior class play.”
Pam Allen, Educator, Dublin City Schools

“Not only did you address all the diverse areas in which we were interested, you also personalized the session by sharing your backgrounds and experience with us.  The group presentation really showed us how much teamwork goes into the challenging business of putting on plays and operating a theatrical company.”
Jill C. Dardig, Professor of Education, Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, Ohio

“I found all of the information presented to be vital in assisting my students in becoming employees in the future.  The information you provided will help me to adjust my curriculum to better prepare the kids today for the real world.”
Beth Griffin, Grizzell Middle School, Dublin, Ohio

“Thank you for arranging for our group to attend Having Our Say.  The Writer’s View kids (& parents) enjoyed it very much.  I was impressed as usual with the professionalism of the actors.  It was a great experience.”
