“Sleek and stylish, CATCO’s (Shorts Festival 2002) demonstrates that central Ohio’s leading professional theater has found a distinctive niche.”
The Columbus Dispatch

Prepare for a hauntingly good time as CATCO’s bi-annual celebration of Ohio playwrights returns – at Halloween this time. A winner with audiences since it was launched in the early 1990s, the Shorts Festivals feature world premieres of short plays featuring a cast of versatile actors. The setting for The Shorts Festival 2006 is a haunted theatre, the old Hartman Theatre in Downtown Columbus, anytime from the early 1900s when the theatre was built to the present. The plays haven’t been written yet, but plan to be thoroughly entertained, possibly even spooked.

The Shorts Festival 2006 Play Descriptions

Setting: Old Hartman Theatre in Downtown Columbus anytime from early 1900s, when the hotel opened, to the present and future

  • Snake Oil by Wendy MacLeod -- Dr. Samuel Hartman delivers a pitch for his patent medicine Peruna.
  • Two Clowns by Scott Tobin -- Two actors rehearse a scene from Hamlet. But what’s that body bag doing on the stage?
  • Merely Players by Jerry Holt -- The caretaker of the Hartman Theatre is visited by some ridiculous theatre ghosts.
  • The Blueballs by Marianne Timmons -- A couple of hardcore rock ‘n rollers decide the abandoned Hartman is the perfect place for a headbangers’ ball.
  • Haunted by Eric Coble -- A young actress preparing for her entrance finds it hard to concentrate when confronted by some “know-it-all” spirits.
  • The Death Scene From Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story” by Jim Vess -- What does a director do when one actor just doesn’t “feel it” and the other actor is losing his cool? He gives them knives, of course.
  • Us Chickens by Mary Tensing -- It’s unfortunate when a theatre ghost is too “chicken” to haunt. It’s even more unfortunate when he takes the advice of friends.
  • Perpetual Present Tense by Peter Pauze -- The entire history of the Hartman and the true meaning of theatre are presented simultaneously in four different eras.
